Prof. Marco A. Cimmino graduated with honours in medicine at the University of Genova, Italy in 1978. He then obtained his specialization degrees with honours in Rheumatology (University of Genova, 1982) and Medical Hydrology (University of Milan, 1984). He became researcher in Rheumatology in 1981, associate Professor of Rheumatology in 2005, and obtained the Chair of Rheumatology in the Podiatric Course in 2007. His main research interests are epidemiology of the rheumatic diseases, imaging of arthritis and vasculitis through MRI, US and PET/CT, polymyalgia rheumatica, gout and Lyme disease. MA Cimmino published 240 papers in indexed journals with impact factor. He participated to the development of diagnostic criteria and management recommendations for polymyalgia rheumatic and giant cell arteritis, is chairman of the Pet Interest Group, and member of several rheumatological associations. He founded a university spin-off for the development of new imaging techniques in rheumatology. He has served in the editorial board of Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, and is presently member of the editorial board of Bailliere’s Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology and chief editor of Reumatismo, the journal of the Italian Society of Rheumatology.

Dr. Serena Fasano obtained her M.D. degree in 2010 from the University Federico II, Naples, Italy, and completed her rheumatology residency training successfully at the University of Campania L. Vanvitelli, Naples, Italy, in 2016. She completed her PhD in translational medicine in 2019, and since then she has been working as a researcher and clinical rheumatologist at the University of Campania L. Vanvitelli and the San Giovanni Bosco Hospital in Naples. Her interests are more in the research field of connective tissue disorders, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus. Her professional activities also include reviewing scientific manuscripts for high-impact journals such as Arthritis Research & Therapy, Lupus, Rheumatology Journal, Clinical Rheumatology, BMC Rheumatology, Frontiers in Lupus, Frontiers in Immunology, and Frontiers in Medicine. She has also been a review editor for Frontiers in Medicine, specialty section Rheumatology, and Frontiers in Lupus.

Prof. Garifallia Sakellariou graduated with honors in medicine at the University of Pavia, Italy, in 2007. She obtained her specialization degree with honors in rheumatology in 2012 and her PhD in internal medicine and medical therapy in 2016 at the University of Pavia. She holds a master's degree in translational research in rheumatology (University of Trieste, 2016) and epidemiological and biostatistical methodology for biomedical research (University of Milano Bicocca, 2020). She received formal training for performing systematic literature reviews for the development of evidence-based guidelines at the Italian Cochrane Center (Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, 2011). She became a researcher in rheumatology in 2018 and an Associate Professor of rheumatology in 2021 at the University of Pavia. Her main research interests are the applications of imaging, in particular musculoskeletal ultrasound, in rheumatic diseases, the use of real-world data for research in rheumatic diseases, and evidence-based medicine applied to rheumatology. Prof. Sakellariou published 82 papers in indexed journals with impact factor. She participated in the development of EULAR recommendations on the applications of imaging in osteoarthritis and crystal-induced arthritis, and she is a member of several rheumatological associations and working groups with specific interest in ultrasound. She is the co-convenor of the EULAR introductory online ultrasound course. She serves as associate editor of Frontiers in Medicine – Rheumatology section and as associate editor of Reumatismo, the journal of the Italian Society of Rheumatology.

Dr. Monica Todoerti obtained her M.D. degree in 2006 from the University of Medical Sciences in Pavia, Italy, thus completing her rheumatology residency training successfully in 2011. In 2014, she obtained a master's degree in internal medicine and medical therapy. Since 2011, she has been working as an M.D. at the Rheumatologic Unit of IRCCS San Matteo Pavia, mainly dealing with early and advanced rheumatoid arthritis patients, with either clinical or scientific activities. She was involved in national and international committees aimed at the drafting of guidelines and recommendations (2008-2009 “3E International Initiative “How to investigate and follow up undifferentiated peripheral inflammatory arthritis?”; 2009-2010 “Commission for the update of the guidelines of biological therapy in rheumatology”; “Systematic review of 2008-2012 literature and update of recommendations for the use of methotrexate in rheumatic diseases, with a focus on rheumatoid arthritis. Reumatismo 2013;65(5):207-18”). She published several articles in different international and national scientific journals, and she actively participated in national and international congresses with personal contributions (oral presentations). From 2014 to 2019, she served as a scientific consultant for V-Start Magazine and the Reumatic.com website, resulting in numerous scientific contributions. Her interests have been more in the research field of chronic arthritis and its treatments with both conventional and biological therapies, with a specific focus on methotrexate treatment; on this last topic, she published several scientific information booklets for Italian rheumatologists. During and after her academic period in Pavia, she also worked as an MD at the Humanitas Institute of Milan (October 2015-May 2016, as a part-time consultant) and at SS Antonio e Biagio e C. Arrigo Hospital in Alessandria (February 2018-April 2023); she is actually working at the Local Health Company of Alessandria (from May 2023; in progress). During November 2018-2020 and November 2020-2022, she was elected councilor of the Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR), being actively involved in developing and managing projects in the field of scientific research, training, and healthcare in Italian Rheumatology. After obtaining a master’s degree in clinical nutrition and attending a 3-year school of acupuncture, besides rheumatology, her current professional activities also include such complemented and integrated treatments of patients suffering from rheumatic diseases.
